Matthew Steinbach is in his eighth year as Head Men’s and Women’s Golf Coach at Simon Fraser University, Canada’s only NCAA Golf Program. Under his leadership, the program has achieved record-breaking results, won numerous awards and accolades. In four short years, SFU has won 16 team titles, including the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) for Women in 2017, 2019, 2023 and Men in 2018 and 2023. Steinbach led the Women’s team to their first ever NCAA Regionals appearance in 2017 and has followed up with Regional appearances with the Men’s team in 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023 and the Women in 2019 and 2023.

Coach Steinbach was named the 2020 NCAA West Region Men’s Coach of the Year in addition to being named GNAC Men’s and Women’s Coach of the Year. Steinbach was recognized as GNAC Coach of the year in 2019, 2020, 2023 (Women) and 2018, 2020, 2023 (Men) as well as the PGA of BC Lower Mainland Coach of the Year in 2017.

Originally, from Red Deer, Alberta, Steinbach joined Simon Fraser University in 2002 after playing one year at NCAA Division I, Central Connecticut State University. While obtaining his Bachelor of Arts Degree as a Communications Major (2006), Steinbach was a team captain of the men's varsity golf team at SFU, still holding a top ten scoring average in program history. During his university career, Steinbach won the NCAA DI NEC Conference Preview and the 2005 Canadian Universities Championship.

After graduation, Steinbach hung up the competitive golf clubs and joined General Mills Canada where he worked for seven years in multiple sales and customer development roles in Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver. Steinbach returned to golf in 2015 when he left General Mills and joined the PGA of Canada as a Golf Professional. His first role in the golf industry was working for British Columbia Golf Association in the role of Golf Participation Manager while also serving as an Assistant Coach at Simon Fraser University.

As Canada’s only NCAA golf program, Simon Fraser University offers a truly unique post-secondary golf options with world-class Canadian academics combined with top tier NCAA competition. In additional to being a member of the PGA of Canada, Coach Steinbach is also a member of the Golf Coaches Association of America and the Women’s Golf Association of America where he holds positions on both West Region Committees (Men’s Regional Awards; Women’s Regional Rankings) and serves on the NCAA Coaches Connections for the GNAC.
