The Championships  - Assistants, Women’s, Seniors

The PGA Atlantic Championships took place June 27th and 28th at Oakfield Golf and Country Club; a perfect setting for the Championships as Oakfield celebrates its 60th anniversary. It brought out some great competitors in all three divisions. This year PGA of Canada Atlantic was proud to name GolfTrends the official presenting sponsor of the 2022 PGA Atlantic Assistants Championship. GolfTrends, a family-owned and operated organization, strives to be the most trusted partner in golf, one customer at a time and has over 30 years of experience operating in the Atlantic Region. They are a premiere golf product distributor partnering with pro shop operators and golf store managers.

Assistants Championship

The PGA Assistant Professionals brought out their best skills that resulted in a tight battle for the championship until the very end. After the first round, the top three included Bradford Curren of Oakfield in first with a one over par 73, Thomas Keddy of Maplewood Golf Course in second, and a three-way tie for third with Connor Shea, Mark Rogers, and Austin Fraser. The intermittent rain on the second day set the stage. The Championship saw Thomas Keddy and Connor Shea of Andersons Creek tied after 36 holes. The battle continued for five playoff holes where ultimately Keddy walked away with the title of the 2022 PGA Atlantic Assistants Champion.

Thomas Keddy, Connor Shea, Bradford Curren and Jordan Ells (Trackman Canada) were named the Atlantic Team and will compete on behalf of the PGA Atlantic at the PGA Assistants Championships of Canada at The Algonquin Golf Course from September 11th-14th. The members of the PGA of Atlantic Canada wishes them the best of luck.

Womens Championship

It was a great year for the Women’s Championships at Oakfield Golf and Country Club. Anne Balser of the host Oakfield Golf & CC was on the course battling hard against Cristal Romero of Eaglequest Grandview Golf. Romero was on top of the leaderboard holding a six-stroke lead after round one with a plus 5 score of 77.  Balser put up a strong fight during the second round where she had the lead during the final nine holes but it was ultimately Romero who walked away with the title of the 2022 PGA Atlantic Women’s Champion. Balser finished with 78 in the final round whereas Romero’s 82 was enough for the victory.

Cristal Romero qualified to represent the PGA of Canada Atlantic in the PGA of Canada Women’s Championship.

Seniors Championship

The Seniors Championships at Oakfield Golf and Country Club brought out some of the best competitors. 2021 Champion Steven Toombs was there to defend his title and was in third after the first round. Gordie Smith of Ashburn was sitting in first after the first 18 holes with an 80, followed by Kevin Dugas of The Links At Montague with an 81. The tight battle between Smith and Dugas continued into the second round resulting in much better play where both players posted four over par 76. Smith’s 156 total was good enough for a one shot victory over Dugas as he claimed the 2022 PGA Atlantic Seniors Championship.

Gordie Smith will be invited to the PGA Seniors Championships of Canada at Medicine Hat, Alberta to represent PGA of Canada Atlantic.
